Refugee Week 2009 had a new addition - a film festival jam packed with screenings, workshops, exhibitions, music, performances, videotech and Q & A sessions.
Film festival events took place all over the country celebrating the positive impact refugees and asylum seekers have made on communities in Scotland while providing a deeper understanding of the issues affecting them.
Selected films, specially programmed by Glasgow Film Theatre, toured cinemas during the week from Dundee to Dumfries reaching new audiences. The weekend event over the 20th-21st of June took place in GMAC, the last event to be held in the Albion Street premises before their re-location to Trongate 103, and was a multi-partnership performance.
The vibrant weekend consisted of international screenings selected by Document and Camcorder Guerrillas, and home grown films made in Scotland by Diversity Films, Media Co-op and Media Education. Live entertainment was provided by First Tiger and Real A, an engaging exhibition by Artists in Exile and, to top it off, a range of international food and refreshments kindly donated by local Merchant City businesses.
The Sunday evening culminated in a celebration of diverse films submitted by the public to the One Scotland Many Voices festival. The festival was full of energy with over 200 people from central Scotland in attendance at GMAC during the weekend.
A new website was created http://www.refugeeweekscotlandfilmfestival.com for listings and the festival events were the result of partnership working between; Scottish Refugee Council, Glasgow Media Access Centre, Document, Camcorder Guerrillas, Diversity Films, Media Education, Media Co-op, Artists in Exile, Glasgow Film Theatre, Edinburgh Filmhouse, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre.
